Dear Parents & Guardians,
Many of you have heard that we are taking part in a book challenge this year!
In order to become better readers we need to be practicing our reading . I’ve had several students admit to me that they read less than 10 or even as few as 3 books last year! To those students 40 books may seem like an insurmountable amount, but I have complete faith in our ability to do this. In fact, the majority of my reading students when anonymously polled believed they could make this happen!
One final thing: students should be reading books at their own level. As parents we often want to “tempt” our children with classics or challenging reads. I know that it would seem that increasing the difficulty of the books your student is reading might be important, but independent reading should be easy—at their level or even a bit below. We want students to increase the volume or amount of books they read and get into a reading “flow.” It’s hard to develop a love for reading when you have to concentrate on understanding the words and not the story itself. Rest assured, I will be challenging all students in small guided groups where they will receive guidance and support throughout the year.
Please see the attached pdf file for a further explanation of the reading challenge. I encourage you to check out my latest blog post on why a high volume of reading is important at ReadingRaptors.weebly.com. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me!
