This year the reading teachers at East are challenging our sixth graders to read 40 books. Why? Research has shown that the more a child reads, the better at reading they become. Children who read more have higher vocabularies and score better on standardized tests.
The challenge is not meant for grading purposes. It is designed to stretch ourselves as readers and to have all students read more than ever before. Although 40 books may sound like a lot, students will only have to average about one book per week. If students are making the right book choices, reading during our independent reading time at school, and spending 20-30 minutes reading at home at least 5 nights per week I am confident they will be able to achieve this goal! Some students are already planning on exceeding it!
